Route Connections

Just as carpoolers can use transit to finish their commutes, people who walk or bicycle to work might like to drive or use the bus for part of their trip. This is made clear by the interest bicycle riders have in bike racks on buses, which allow them to transport the bicycle right along with them. (Gogebic County Transit Authority and Houghton Public Transit currently provide this service.) The possibility of combining different transportation modes to complete a trip is simpler and more reasonable in the city, but there are also certain rural trails and walking routes that pass near park-and-ride lots and transit access points. Even those non-motorized routes that do not pass near transit or park-and-ride may be conducive to informal park & ride to facilitate a part-driving/part-non-motorized trip.

The table below is a county-by-county inventory of long-distance recreation trails and a few local paths that may be useful for commuting. Most of the long-distance trails pass through several communities and are accessible either by a transit provider or a park-and-ride lot. Long-distance trail routes can be seen in the non-motorized maps.

“Use” definitions are as follows:

  • Hiking: Only on-foot activities such as hiking, walking, and running are permitted; all mechanical vehicles are prohibited. This mainly applies to North Country Trail, but some sections of that trail do allow other uses.
  • Non-Motorized: Foot, bicycle, and ski/snowshoe traffic are permitted, depending on season, but the trail may or may not be groomed for winter use.
  • Multi-Use: Both motorized and non-motorized uses are permitted, though in many cases motorized traffic predominates.
  • Motorized: These trails are dedicated to snowmobile traffic in winter.

In cases where summer and winter uses are the same, the two columns are combined in the trail’s row in the table.
