Michigan Department of Health and Human Services

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) provides public assistance, child and family welfare services in the State of Michigan, including all six counties in the Region. DHHS works with volunteer drivers, transit providers, and non-profit organizations to provide transportation for the agency’s local Medicaid clients to distant medical appointments. Local transportation is also provided to some clients with chronic, ongoing conditions. Volunteers utilize their own vehicles. DHHS requests as much notice as possible to arrange rides.

Consumers are encouraged to use other resources before DHHS if possible. Those persons not utilizing the state assistance programs above are not eligible for DHHS transportation services. In these cases, referrals are made to other providers such as the Lake Gogebic Senior Citizens Program in Bergland, Gogebic-Ontonagon Community Action Agency, Ontonagon County Commission on Aging, and county & local public transit systems.
